This melodically 'crooked' setting of the hoary Capt. Kidd ballad formula expresses the reverence for the divine as expressed through nature, a theme that unifies many of Ingalls' folk hymn settings.
The 1792 text is by Elder Hibbard and is also found in a popular variant called Capt Kid. It has been sung by Vermont's expiremental Bread and Puppet theatre as part of their performance tradition since the early 1970's. Honor to the Hills is also the title of a children's book as well as a CD by Northern Harmony.
